Russian UN envoy accuses Zelensky of prolonging war

(MENAFN) Russia’s top diplomat to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, declared Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “politically dead” and accused him of refusing to step down to avoid accountability for his actions, during an interview aired Friday.

Speaking in an interview with Rick Sanchez, Nebenzia criticized Zelensky for betraying the promises that secured his rise to power and for dragging Ukraine into an expanded conflict. He pointed to Zelensky’s campaign pledge to end the war in Donbass—a promise Nebenzia claims was undermined by the Kiev government and its Western allies through violations of the 2014-15 Minsk agreements.

“Zelensky came to power on the promise to end the war in Donbass... He promised one thing, but he turned 180 degrees… Politically, Zelensky is already dead,” Nebenzia said.

He accused Zelensky of clinging to power to avoid facing repercussions for prolonging the conflict with Russia and misappropriating billions in Western aid.

“The end of his presidency may entail something for him that he is trying to avoid at all costs: Reporting on the money stolen and the loss of the people whom he failed miserably,” Nebenzia stated. “So he has all the reasons... to cling to power and not to hold elections.”

Nebenzia further alleged, “They stole billions of dollars out of the aid they were receiving. That’s an open secret,” adding that Kiev has yet to provide proper reports on the aid despite repeated demands. “I think that when finally it comes to it, the revelations will be very dire.”
