Belarus Moves to Establish Embassy in North Korea
Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov, speaking to a state news agency, confirmed the directive, stating: "The president has set very specific objectives. Opening our embassy here in response to the DPRK (North Korean) embassy, which has long existed in the Republic of Belarus."
Beyond the embassy, Lukashenko has pressed officials to fast-track a visa-free entry deal for Belarusian nationals traveling to the reclusive state. Ryzhenkov outlined the broader ambition, saying: "And, in general, building on the already signed Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, we will examine the entire range of issues that we can address in the very near future," identifying healthcare, education, and agriculture as priority sectors.
The announcements follow Lukashenko's landmark first visit to Pyongyang, during which both governments inked a formal "friendship treaty." Standing alongside North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the Belarusian president declared that relations between the two countries are now entering "a fundamentally new stage."
North Korea has maintained a resident embassy in Minsk since 2016 — a diplomatic presence Lukashenko is now determined to match.
The rapprochement underscores a growing pattern of authoritarian states — both subject to sweeping Western sanctions — consolidating ties as geopolitical fault lines continue to deepen globally.
