Russian-Belarus Joint Drills Show Nuclear Missile Handling Procedures
According to reports, the exercise forms part of an ongoing nuclear-sharing framework between the two countries, which was introduced in 2023. At the time of its establishment, both sides described the arrangement as a response to what they view as increasing pressure and hostility from NATO and Western military structures, drawing comparisons with similar nuclear cooperation practices within the alliance.
Within Belarus, several Iskander missile platforms have been deployed as part of this arrangement. The nuclear payloads associated with these systems, referred to in Russian military terminology as “special munitions,” are not stored on the launchers themselves but are kept separately in a secured storage facility under strict protection.
The released video material reportedly shows stages of a drill involving the “delivery of nuclear munitions to field storage locations at the position of a missile brigade of the Republic of Belarus.” The footage depicts both daytime and nighttime operations, including the handling and transportation of the warhead components. After receiving the transfer, units are shown proceeding to “discreetly move to an area designated for test launches.”
In addition to the missile-focused segment, further released footage highlights broader elements of Russia’s nuclear forces participating in the same exercise. This includes mobile intercontinental ballistic missile launchers being escorted by armed security units, the deployment of the nuclear-powered submarine Imperator Aleksandr III operating in the Pacific region, and preparations involving a MiG-31K fighter jet configured to carry the nuclear-capable Kinzhal hypersonic missile during a test flight scenario.
