EAEU Leaders Urge Armenia to Hold Referendum on EU Alignment vs Bloc Membership
A joint statement attributed to Russian President Vladimir Putin and the leaders of Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan said that Armenian citizens should directly determine the country’s geopolitical and economic orientation amid its growing engagement with the EU.
The statement, released by the Kremlin, emphasized that such a vote should be organized as soon as possible, allowing the public to choose between EU accession and continued participation in the Moscow-led economic bloc.
The four leaders also warned that Armenia’s steps toward potential EU membership could create “significant risks” for the economic stability of EAEU member states, according to reports.
They further indicated that an assessment of the potential consequences of Armenia leaving the union is expected to be presented in December 2026.
Tensions have been rising within the bloc as Armenia has increased its engagement with European institutions and advanced domestic legislative steps toward possible EU accession. According to reports, this has fueled concerns among EAEU members about long-term economic and political cohesion.
Russian officials have repeatedly stated that EU membership is incompatible with participation in the EAEU, while Armenian authorities have maintained that they aim to preserve their existing regional commitments while also expanding cooperation with Europe.
